The Catholic church entered in this beautiful Hill of Darjeeling by the advent of the Irish Loreto Nuns in 1846 followed by Fr. John McGirr a Capuchin missionary and the first chaplain to the Loreto nuns. Dr. Carew, the Archbishop of Calcutta entrusted to a committee of lay people Mr. William Moran, Mr.R.J. Loughnan and Captain Samler to find a suitable piece of land for the Convent, School and so on. Thus they managed to buy three plots of land. The first site known as “Sunny Bank “now is St. Robert`s Higher Secondary School and the Bishops House complex. The second is now Loreto Convent and the School, The third is now a beautiful Loreto garden. The Jesuits, who arrived in Darjeeling to replace the Capuchins, shifted the school to North point and Archbishop Goethals built a presbytery there in 1891. This presbytery became the residence for the priests who looked after the faithful of Darjeeling and a Health Centre for the sick priests. Later this house was named Archbishop`s House in order to distinguish it from other protestant denominations. This was also known as the summer resident of Archbishop of Calcutta. In 1962 when Darjeeling became a Diocese , Archbishop of Calcutta handed over this beautiful house to the first bishop of Darjeeling and is now known as Bishop`s House, Darjeeling
