The congregation of the sisters of the Apostolic Carmel is an Indian Congregation, which was, founded in 1870 by Mother Veronica of the passion, a holy and dedicated woman, who was divinely inspired to reach out to the many girls of her day. The light of Education was deprived to the Indian Girls in those days. It was for the cause of these girls that Mother Veronica founded the Apostolic Carmel to render Educational services. The Congregation was first established in Mangalore and the Southern states now have Institutions all over the Country and abroad. The Carmel Sisters cater to the needs of children in high schools and higher primary schools, teacher training institutions, degree colleges and technical schools, which are conducted both in the Regional languages and in the English medium, as well as in hospitals, crèches, children’s homes, hostels and boarding houses and social service centres in rural areas in India, Sri Lanka, Kuwait, Pakistan, Rome Africa and Bahrain Carmel Convent Pakyong was opened on 9th July 1995 and soon after on the 1st of August Carmel Teacher Training Institute was officially inaugurated. This was possible because of the earnest request of Late Bishop Eric Benjamin of Darjeeling Diocese. Besides the Teacher Training Institute, the sisters run a hostel for the T.T.I students and a nursery class. They also participate in the pastoral activities of the parish.

Carmel Convent, Kurseong was opened on 30th September 1995. Rev. Fr. Thomas D’Souza, the then Administrator of the Diocese of Darjeeling invited the Apostolic Carmel sisters to run a women’s welfare centre at Giddha Pahar in Kurseong. The sisters also run an English medium primary school. Two sisters manage St. Alphonsus’ primary School; participate in the pastoral activities of the parish. Present strength of the congregation the Diocese is 14 in 2 communities
