TEA LEAVES, FEBRUARY 2010
BISHOP’S MESSAGE FOR LENT
These days we hear a lot of talk about the end of the world in 2012. Surprisingly there are as many who are ready to buy this story as there are sceptics. Those who take this crap seriously get another opportunity to indulge themselves in hedonistic lifestyle, “eat, drink and make merry for tomorrow you will die.” There is a small minority of people who laugh off the whole matter saying that they have heard such stories many times in the past. When one looks at the nature’s fury in the recent years like the Tsunami, Aila and the earthquake in Haiti, coupled with the manmade disasters like war and terrorism, one could be forgiven for believing in end-of-the-world stories. From a purely cosmological point of view the world is not going to end in a hurry. Whether the world ends sooner or later is secondary but as a Christian I must seriously think about when and how my end will come and whether I am prepared to face it.
This reminds me of the conversion story of the people of Nineveh after God spoke to them through Prophet Jonah. “When God saw what they did and how they turned from their evil ways, he had compassion and did not carry out the destruction he had threatened upon them.”(Jonah 3:1-10, 4:1 ff.)
After a brief ordinary season post-Christmas the Church offers us forty days of Lent. This time of grace invites us to go deeper in our relationship with God, by hearing the Word of God like that of the people of Nineveh. The true observation of Lent involves reconciliation with God and with one`s own neighbour. This we usually do by prayer, fasting and works of mercy. The Office of Readings gives us the following insight, “Almsgiving is one form of repentance and a good one too; fasting is better than prayer; but almsgiving is better than both, because charity covers a multitude of sins. Prayer is a sure shield against death, and blessed is the man found perfect in these three ways. One last word, almsgiving lightens the load of sin.” (The Divine Office, III, p. 755). Let us spend this Lent seeking God`s infinite mercy and convert ourselves from the corruption of sin so that we can prepare ourselves for the joy of resurrection.

Sr. Carmella in her short summary encouraged each parish to start 12 meetings of the Eucharistic Crusade and urged all animators to be more committed. Both Fr Swid and Sr. Carmella expressed their thanks to all the animators for their generous and committed service in taking care of the children. As a token of gratitude all the animators were given a small gift by Fr Swid on behalf of the commission.
On 29 January the animators enjoyed a day out at Mirik Lake, Darjeeling and a passing visit to Pashupati, Nepal. It was a picnic with a difference. The animators were first fed with spiritual nourishment by the Holy Eucharist celebrated by Fr Frederick Lepcha in Don Bosco Church, Mirik. The organizers and animators are very grateful to Fr Mathew Pulingathil, SDB, rector & parish priest, Fr Jose, SDB, Principal of Don Bosco School, and Fr Jag Jiwan Ram, SDB, associate parish priest for their warm welcome and hospitality.

On 20th January seventeen youth of the parish trekked from Arubotey to Sukhia Pokhari for 3 hours before catching a taxi to Darjeeling to make a three-day retreat. They were housed at the now vacant former John XXIII Institute. Fr Frederick Lepcha and Br. Boniface Rai shared the responsibility of guiding them.
